Phillies youth movement in full effect
With just 2 weeks into the MLB auction draft the Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the more busy teams around the league. It seems as though the Phillies new GM Dylan Hiatt has decided to go with a youth movement which in the fans mind is a refreshing path to take as the last few years haven't been the best for the Phillies. 2 of Dylan Hiatt's prized signings Jon Singleton and Javier Baez are both young and relatively unknown with limited at bats. Hiatt says while he went a little over budget on the 2 he feels by the end of the deals both will have been steals who will be stalwarts in the middle of the Phillies lineup for years to come. To go along with Singleton and Baez the Phillies have also signed young up and comers Christian Vazquez and Nick Franklin to low risk high rewards deals. Both are seen as high upside players by the new GM who is ecstatic to get them on team friendly deals. To round out the roster the Phillies signed a familiar face in Ryan Howard and former all-star Mark Teixeira. Howard and Teixeira are both looking for bounce back years. Although it is still early in the process I think its safe to say the Phillies future is looking a lot brighter.

BREAKING NEWS
Moments ago the Philadelphia Phillies and former Seattle Mariners 3B have come to terms on a 3 year $30M deal. Seager coming off his best year as pro hit 25 home runs with 96 RBIs. According to GM Dylan Hiatt Seager was a priority signing for the Phillies. The GM feels Seager will be able to provide veteran leadership, a middle of the order bat, and the franchises best 3B since Scott Rolen. At the end of the day this seems to be a smart and safe signing with Seagers best years presumably ahead of him.

Phils take Sano
With the 10th overall selection in the MLB prospect draft the Phillies take a big risk with a huge reward by taking 3B Miguel Sano formerly top prospect of the Minnesota Twins. Viewed by many as one of the top 3B prospects in all of baseball Sano is coming off of Tommy John surgery and missed all of last season rehabbing. Sano might be the best power hitter in the minor leagues but that comes with the price of striking out over 140 times in his 1st 2 seasons of full season ball. If Sano can comeback from the surgery and figure out how to make more contact I believe he can be the best 3B in the game.

Phils whiff on OF
With the OF auction wrapping up the Phillies lineup has taken shape. Many fans are upset with the front office with the lack of a big name signing. While Michael Cuddyer,Josh Reddick,Jake Marisnick, and Avisail Garcia are all very solid players on team friendly deals the Phillies faithful were hoping for a big name superstar or 2. When GM Dylan Hiatt was asked about the lack of a big name signing he said "While I understand the fans frustration we were not going to go over spend on players we didn't believe in." He also had this to say "We still have a long way to go until opening day so please judge me on the finished project and not on what we have so far." It looks as though as the Phillies could be geared up towards a big spending spree in the pitchers auction with roughly $79M left to spend on their budget. So I'll hold off my judgement until I see the finished product on the field.

Phillies rotation takes shape
With the SP auctions wrapping up the Phillies rotation takes shape. The Phillies biggest signing of the off-season is without a doubt is the soon to be 26 year old lefty Chris Sale who agreed to a deal worth $90M over 5 years. Sale is widely regarded as 1 of the top 5 starting pitchers in the game. Sale will be the ace of this staff for years to come. In addition to Sale the Phillies also added 2 young Michael Wacha and Zack Wheeler. Both Wacha and Wheeler signed 5 year $35M contracts. While both deals could be seen as risks GM Dylan Hiatt is confident that Wacha and Wheeler will be able to reach their full potential and be apart of the most dominant rotation this sport has ever seen. With Sale,Wheeler, and Wacha holding down the 1st 3 spots of the rotation that will leave the underrated Hyun-Jin Ryu as the #4 starter. Ryu signed a 3 year $15M deal which could be a bargain if Ryu continues to improve on his 1st 2 years in the league. After that the Phillies gambled on Brett Anderson and Clay Buchholz who GM Dylan Hiatt is hoping for bounce back years from both. With $36M left to spend it is possible that Hiatt still has another move left as it has been rumored that he has been in discussion with David Price. If he can land Price maybe fans will forgive him for the lackluster lineup but will that be enough for this team to make a playoff push?
