reading the rules over and over it has come to my attention that theere are only limits on 5 year contracts. with this people can sign as many 4 year deals as they want and that could bog down FA greatly, while this rule cant be changed for mlb, i propose there should be limits for 4-5 year contracts on nba and nfl

To this point, here is the distribution on contracts signed by length:
5 years - 11 contracts, $11.4M average AAV 4 years - 13 contracts, $4.8M average AAV 3 years - 18 contracts, $6.5M average AAV 2 years - 19 contracts, $2.9M average AAV 1 year - 14 contracts, $1.0M average AAV
I don't see an issue here currently in my opinion. I understand why one may be concerned about FA over the next few years, and it is true the players we expect to be higher caliber free agents are likely the ones with 4-5 year deals, but player value changes a lot year to year and I expect there will be plenty of good talent in the FA pool. Also, once the league reaches maturity and the start-up contracts are mostly over, guys will be hitting FA as they use up their team control years and every year should have a comparable batch of FA talent. I think this a great format where each owner is permitted to build their team as they see fit from the ground up.

Dean, that is a great post. I appreciate that. Well done. I have to agree with you.
CJ, what kind of limits are you proposing, Just on 4 and 5 year deals for NFL and NBA? What limits are you proposing? I would be open to potentially adding limits on 4 years as well, but if, and only if, it receives 75% of a vote from the league in a poll.

I would be open to applying the same limits on 4 years contracts, or even shrinking the number of 5 years allotted to each team. Of 24 players (just gonna throw some numbers out there), I'd be happy with 8 5-year contracts and 8 4-year contracts. This puts 1/3 of your team under direct control for the maximum length, and still keeps the best players out of a single FA pool.
Again, these are just numbers I thought of on the spot, that might perform the service people seem to want.
Dean, I agree that while those indicate a healthy spread, most of the short contracts are being signed by backup level guys. The problem appears to be that the 'top names' will be stacked into one year.
I got left with nothin but a Penny...so I had to learn to do it the Hardaway.

I'd propose cutting the number of 5 year deals allowed in half...and take that half and make them 4 year deals.
So if you are allowed 10 - 5 year contracts, you'd be allowed 5 - 5 yrs, and 5 - 4 yr contracts. That way you are are able to lock up the same number of players, just some for 4 years.
For what's it worth. We are going to do whatever the majority wants. We will need a SOLID proposition or two, to be put to voting.
Doing a 4 year deal comes with risk. As someone said above or in the chatroll, just look at the ESPN MLB Rankings from 2011 or 2010. Honestly, I think if owners just load up in 4 year deals, they definitely won't be contending in the third or fourth years, maybe not even next year. However, if the majority want a change, I would be fine. As said above, I am fine with lowering the limit on 5-Year bids a bit.
